The things I see going on in the USA break my heart. Continued racial injustice and inequality have sparked a war that we can't turn our backs on. This must end here. We must begin to heal old wounds, and make policy changes that ensure that new wounds will not be opened. We are ALL brothers and sisters, no matter our skin color, and we must fight to see that we live in a world that treats our brothers and sisters of color with the respect and dignity every human deserves.
I am unable to be on the front lines, marching and protesting, so I have to ask myself, what can I do? All I can offer are my words of support, encouragement, and continued commitment to share/promote the words and creations of POC on my very small (minuscule really) social media platform. As well as voting for leaders who can and will uphold justice and promote equality.
I'm a creative, and I tend to feel things very deeply. This usually shows itself in my photography and/or my writing. I haven't picked up my camera in some months now, as all I see mostly are these four walls. But, I have picked up my pen and I've been writing. At this time, my poems are focused on what I see happening around the world. Racial injustice, COVID-19, isolation, mental health, etc... I don't want my take on these issues to offend anyone, so I have been hesitant to share. However, I think what the world needs most is for all voices to unite to bring about change, and that includes yours and mine. Everyone needs to take a stand and use their voice to help make this a world we are proud to live in.​​​​​​​
I know that if it weren't for the meditation practices that I have been following since March, that I'd be having a more difficult time navigating our world right now. The fear, anxiety, and isolation of COIVID-19 have weighed heavily on us all and now we find ourselves in a battle for equality and justice for POC, which is long overdue. That being said...
If I could recommend anything at this point, for your mental health, it would be meditation. I'm currently taking a workshop via Zoom called Fill Your Cup With Self Compassion by Mindful Mike. We are in week three and using the Metta Meditation, and it's wonderful. It really resonates with the time we are in. So much of our energy and compassion is going out to others right now, but we can't forget to employ a bit of self care, or else we won't have anymore energy or compassion to give. We'll simply burn out.
So, since I last wrote about the books I was reading and had finished, I have completed four more... Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, The Mindful Geek by Michael W Taft, Dear Midnight by Zack Grey, and Happiness by Heather Harpham. Whew, I've been doing a lot of reading. Happiness was book #25 for this year, which is well above my goal of just one book a month. So yeah, I'm pretty happy with that. I have some books on my Kindle reading list ready to be read, but I wonder if you guys have any recommendations?
Anyway, this is a short post today, but I want to leave you with one final message. Please, get out and vote! Now, more than ever, it is important for your voice to be heard and for us to vote in leaders who have everyone's interest at heart; not just those of white America. I mailed off my request for an absentee ballot this morning, and I'm hoping I actually get it this time. Be mindful in your vote. Just because you always voted Republican because your husband does, and your parents did and their parents did, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Search your heart and vote for the person who is the best candidate for the job.
