You can't go to Rome and not see the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. These two iconic spots are beautiful must sees and are situated fairly close to one another. Plus they are free! And who doesn't like free?! We made it a point to get up and out super early, so we could get to the fountain before the massive crowds. We were so lucky to be there early enough to only have maybe a dozen other visitors there as well. As soon as we got our photos of the fountain and tossed some obligatory coins in, we headed to the Spanish Steps.
Since it was still quite early, we were afforded views of the steps without too many people, which was fantastic. We were there in 2019, right before the new regulations were put into place, so we got lucky. As it now stands, you can no longer sit on any part of the steps. If you do, you face a pretty hefty fine. If I were you, I'd avoid the fine and just keep standing.
Once we were done with these two sites we were able to grab a quick breakfast, as there isn't a shortage of lovely cafes around this area, and then explore. There is some pretty fantastic high end shopping, if that's your thing, as well as plenty of gift shops. Plus there are just some great little streets and quaint areas you can wander through, that really have a fantastic vibe. If you have to go back by Trevi (as we did) on your way back to your lodgings or your next stop of the day, be aware that you'll have a difficult time passing through. 2 hours made such a huge difference in the crowd. People were packed into that area like sardines!
